The role of the physiotherapist for a competitive athlete

The figure of the physiotherapist is now recognised as fundamental in the world of sport. Athletes, whether professional or agonists at different levels, train intensively to reach competitions to the best of their abilities, setting themselves challenging goals and always giving the best of themselves. In this situation, the body and its resources are constantly called upon with high frequency and intensity. This is where the concrete need arises to make use of the figure of the physiotherapist, to guarantee professional assistance both in the preparation phase, in competition and in post-competition recovery. Sports physiotherapy has an important curative role in intervening in acute and chronic disabling medical conditions. In the case of injury, the event must be addressed in a holistic manner, as it is an experience that can compromise a person's sense of stability and psychophysical continuity during their sporting career. It is essential to consider the injury as a multifactorial event, through collaboration between professionals, in order to optimise overall recovery.

For this reason, Fisio&Lab has created an integrated itinerary where, during rehabilitation, we work together with the doctor, the sports psychologist, the athlete and his or her technical team. The physiotherapist's intervention takes place not only in the event of accidents, but also in terms of prevention, maintenance and restoration of the homeostasis of the systems, i.e. the balance of the organism, in order to avoid potentially risky overloads or tensions. It is necessary to know the specific sporting gesture and to adopt the appropriate techniques in order to promptly detect the first signs of suffering, trying to give continuity to training even when there is a problem. Sports physiotherapy can also intervene in the objectives of improving physical performance by working on specific aspects such as muscular strength, speed, endurance and movement control, following specific training programmes.
